MTV Announces Plans For Digital Music, Media Award Show

The world of online music and media will be honored by MTV later this spring. On Thursday, the network announced that they are planning a new award show dedicated to digital music and media. While a date for the show has yet to be announced, MTV says the ceremony will be broadcast via the Internet, social media sites and mobile devices instead of TV. MTV executive Dermot McCormack explains, quote, "The industry has evolved into a digital medium, and fans have evolved right along with it. So we figured it was time to re-examine how we reward achievement in these new mediums."

McCormack says fans can look forward to an award show they wouldn't "typically see," adding, quote, "When the VMAs happened [in 1984], you had Dan Aykroyd coming out smoking a cigarette. That's the same spirit we'd like to capture here."
