Father Of "American Idol" Judge Announces Senate Run

The father of "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi has announced he is seeking the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate from New York. Joseph DioGuardi says he'll run on a platform of fiscal responsibility against Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. She was appointed to the seat once held by Hillary Clinton last year. In making his announcement Tuesday, DioGuardi said the U.S. is spending money it doesn't have and borrowing from countries who don't share the same values. He said he is certain his daughter will do everything possible to help him get elected.

This is not DioGuardi's first venture into the political arena. He served from 1985 to 1989 as a congressman from Westchester County, New York. At least five other Republicans are in the GOP field for the Senate seat.
