"Avatar" Passes 350-Million In North American Box Office Receipts
The 3D epic "Avatar" continues to enjoy an astronomical box office run. The movie held its top spot during the New Year's weekend, earning 68-point-three million dollars and pushing its North American box office past the 350-million-dollar mark. Worldwide, the film has reportedly already grossed one-billion dollars. There were no new wide releases this week, helping the top movie rankings to remain mostly unchanged. "Sherlock Holmes" -- directed by Guy Ritchie -- was second with 38-point-four million. Coming in third was the family film "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" at 36-point-six million. The Nancy Meyers comedy "It's Complicated" starring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin scored 18-point-seven-million dollars, putting the film in fourth place. Rounding out the top five was "The Blind Side." The Sandra Bullock football drama pulled in an additional 12-point-seven-million dollars, bringing its North American total to date to 209-point-one-million dollars.
