Action, Franchises, And A "Hangover" Win Big In 2009, "Land Of The Lost" Is Lost

Special effects, wizards, vampires, and hangovers ruled the movie box office in 2009. According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, movies with special effects and familiar franchises reigned supreme this year with a few exceptions. The Michael Bay action extravaganza "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" took the top spot in 2009 with over 402-million-dollars in gross sales. In second place was "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" with over 301-million-dollars in domestic receipts. Leading the year's disappointments was Will Ferrell's "Land of the Lost," which took in just over 49-million dollars. The campy sc-ifi adventure had a reported production budget of 100-million dollars and got a prime summer premiere date in June.
