Phil Vassar Is Country Without The Cowboy Hat
Phil Vassar says performers need to be themselves. The singer-songwriter admits that in many ways he doesn't fit the traditional country mold, telling Southern California's PomeradoNews.com he's not into cowboy accessories or strumming a six-string. He notes, quote, "I was always told to put on a hat and play guitar because it's what is done in country music. But you got to do what you love and not listen to everyone because a lot of the time, they don't know what they're saying." Vassar, whose weapon of choice is the piano, says he's been inspired by other pianists, such as Elton John, Billy Joel, and Jerry Lee Lewis. But that hasn't kept him from having a successful country music career, as both a performer and a songwriter. And while Vassar's wardrobe doesn't include cowboy hats, he'll still pen material for singers who wear them. Tim McGraw and Alan Jackson are among the stars who've had hits with Vassar's songs.
