New York City Investigating Spate Of "Sick" Sanitation Workers

The city of New York has launched an investigation to determine if a recent spate of sanitation workers who called in ill were actually sick -- or just sick of reporting to work. NYPost.com reports that following a massive East coast blizzard last week, between 660 and 720 workers were no-shows at their shifts, citing illness as their excuses. Last Monday and Tuesday, snow piled up in the "city that never sleeps" as an estimated eleven to 12 percent of the Sanitation Department's labor force failed to appear on the job, citing illness. Supervisors from the department have reportedly stated that the no-shows were planned, citing the city's recent budget cuts.

Meanwhile, one of New York's biggest shows went on as planned Friday night. Thousands congregated in the city's Times Square to watch the famous ball drop at midnight and welcome in the early hours 2011.
