The creator of one of the world's most iconic hairstyles is being honored by members of her industry this year. ChicagoTribune.com reports that 92-year-old Margaret Heldt is finally getting her due for bringing the "beehive" into existence. The trade association Cosmetologists Chicago has created a scholarship in the Illinois resident's name to be given out in March 2011. As to the beehive itself, the year was 1960 when the editors of "Modern Beauty Salon" magazine asked Heldt to develop a new look to celebrate the incoming decade. Heldt's creation -- a mountain of "ratted" up hair -- was later embraced by legions of mid-century women. More recently, GRAMMY-winner Amy Winehouse and animated matriarch Marge Simpson have sported the "do."
Heldt remembers inventing the style, saying, quote, "Nothing much had happened since the French twist, the pageboy and the flip." She adds that the magazine editors told her, quote, "We want you to come up with something really different."
