Tax Tip: Plenty of Help for Seniors and Millitary Personnel
Almost twelve-thousand sites will be offering free tax help for low-income and older Americans this year. The services will come from partnerships involving the Internal Revenue Service and community groups. The IRS says those who earned less than 49-thousand dollars can participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. People 60 and older can take advantage of the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. Those who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit may also get free tax preparation. Military personnel and their families can benefit from services offered by the Armed Forces Tax Council, where volunteers have training in handling special military taxation questions, including combat zone tax issues. There's more information at http://www.irs.gov/ about how to find places where the free tax help is offered. The website also has a list of documents and information needed to participate in the programs.
