Sutherland Reacts To "24" Cancellation

Kiefer Sutherland is commenting on cancellation of the FOX series "24." Sutherland -- who's played the show's protagonist Jack Bauer since 2001 -- says that "24" is exiting on top. In a statement issued Friday afternoon, Sutherland said, quote, "This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible. While the end of the series is bittersweet, we always wanted '24' to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon." Sutherland has picked up some impressive "hardware" for his turn as Bauer. He's won a Golden Globe, an Emmy, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Golden Satellite Award for his work on the long-running show.

On Friday, "24" director Jon Cassar wrote on Twitter, quote, "News from the 24 set, the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will be no season 9." The show will wrap up its run at the end of this season in a two-hour finale set to air on May 24th. Lower ratings and pricier production reportedly contributed to "24's" demise.
