Singing Cowboys Autry, Rogers Get Postage Stamps
Gene Autry and Roy Rogers will be honored this year with postage stamps. The Western legends are part of the United States Postal Service's upcoming "Cowboys of the Silver Screen" collection. The four-image stamp set will also feature Western film stars Tom Mix and William S. Hart. The USPS notes in a statement that with "Cowboys of the Silver Screen," the postal service, quote, "honors four extraordinary performers who helped make the American Western a popular form of entertainment," adding that they're recognizing, quote, "film stars from the silent era through the singing era." The "Cowboys of the Silver Screen" postage stamp series will become available on April 17th.
Other honorary stamp sets to be released in 2010 include noted naval veterans with "Distinguished Sailors," Mother Teresa, legendary actress Katharine Hepburn, singer Kate Smith, the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, abstract expressionist artists, and the "Sunday Funnies."
