Conan's Ratings Surge As NBC Late Night Drama Unfolds

If he's going out, it looks like Conan O'Brien is going out with a bang. The 46-year-old host of NBC's "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" enjoyed a ratings leap this week among younger viewers. Preliminary Nielsen data indicates that about 42-percent more viewers in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic tuned for "The Tonight Show" on Tuesday night, compared to the previous evening's broadcast. The surge in interest followed the issuance of a public letter by O'Brien to the, quote, "People of Earth" earlier in the day. In the missive, the red-haired host outlined his reasons for rejecting an offer from NBC to host a late night show to begin each weekday after midnight.

The schedule change was requested by the Peacock network to accommodate Jay Leno's move back into late night following a failed run in primetime.
