Eastern Snow Slightly Hampers "Avatar" Receipts

The big-budget 3-D epic "Avatar" won big at the box office this weekend, but fell slightly short of studio expectations. Industry experts are blaming the massive storm on the East Coast for "Avatar's" box office shortcomings. The new film from "Titanic" director James Cameron earned 73-million-dollars for the weekend, while industry analysts expected the movie to bring in around 85-million. "Avatar" reportedly cost more than 300-million-dollars to make. Meantime, Disney's animated "The Princess and the Frog" dropped from its number one position last week to second place with 12-point-two-million dollars in sales. "The Blind Side" starring Sandra Bullock was third at ten-million, while the fish-out-of-water comedy "Did You Hear About The Morgans?" starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker came in fourth with seven-million.

Falling in ticket sales, but still in the top five is "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" with four-point-four million dollars. The latest box office figures bring the film's total North American sales to 274-point-six-million dollars.
