Fred Foy, The Voice Of "The Lone Ranger," Passes On

The voice of "The Lone Ranger" has gone quiet. Frederick William Foy, known to the world as Fred Foy, passed away at his Woburn, Massachusetts, home at the age of 89. A childhood hero for many baby boomers, they remember his deep, velvety tones as he delivered the famous introduction: "Hi-Yo, Silver! A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty 'Hi-Yo Silver'...The Lone Ranger rides again!"

Radio historian Jim Harmon described Foy as "the announcer, perhaps the greatest announcer-narrator in the history of radio drama." World War II veteran Foy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances B. Foy, and three children, Nancy, Wendy and Fritz. He had three grandchildren. A date has not yet been set for a memorial service. The family has asked that any donations be made to the USO.
