Media mogul Oprah Winfrey, singer-songwriter Paul McCartney and country great Merle Haggard are joining an elite group of honorees at the Kennedy Center this year. They, along with composer and lyricist Jerry Herman and choreographer and director Bill T. Jones have been selected to be feted at the 33rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors in December. The honors will be presented on December 4th at a State Department dinner, hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The following evening, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will receive the Honorees at the White House prior to a star-studded gala performance to be held at the Kennedy Center Opera House. CBS will broadcast taped highlights of the gala performance on Tuesday, December 28th at 9:00 pm Eastern.The Kennedy Center Honors recognize recipients for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. Honorees are selected by the Center's Board of Trustees.
