Girlfriend Killed By Lightning Moments Before Proposal
A Tennessee man's marriage proposal took a tragic turn last week. The "Asheville Citizen-Times" is reporting that Bethany Lott was struck and killed by lightning last Friday, just moments before Richard Butler was going to propose. The couple was hiking Max Patch Bald -- a mountain on the North Carolina-Tennessee border -- when they decided to take a moment to enjoy the view. Butler, who was also struck during the incident, says he remembers seeing three bolts of lightning and then seeing his bride-to-be lying on the ground. He attempted to perform CPR, but after a few minutes he was forced to drive for assistance. A man on leave from the Navy with emergency training experience tried to help bring Lott back to life, but was unsuccessful. A devastated Butler recalls, quote, "I put the ring on her finger while the EMTs were working on her. They are listing me as her fiancé in the obituaries."
