Steven Spielberg is bringing the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the big screen. Spielberg's DreamWorks Studios has announced plans to produce a biopic on the late civil rights leader with Spielberg sharing producer credits with Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones.DreamWorks says this will mark the first theatrical motion picture project endorsed by King's estate to use his copyrighted speeches, books and intellectual property. Academy Award-winning screenwriter Ronald Harwood has been tapped to write the screenplay. Harwood says he's keeping his approach to the King screenplay under wraps, only offering that he will quote, "do my utmost to be true to truth."
Harwood's credits include the Oscar-winning screenplay for the Roman Polanski-directed drama "The Pianist." The South African native also wrote the screenplay for the film "Mandela."
